What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

The test is simple: is water escaping, is waste coming back up, or is gas in the air? Those can't wait:

  • A split pipe or failed fitting sending water into a ceiling, a wall cavity or the subfloor
  • Sewage coming up through a shower drain, floor waste or outdoor gully
  • A hot water tank dripping through its base, or pushing out scalding water
  • Any smell of gas, covered separately further down
  • Stormwater surcharging around the slab during a heavy downpour

Everything else costs less booked in daylight than fixed at 2am. Not sure which side your problem falls on? Describe it on the phone, and together with the plumber you decide if it is a tonight job or one for the morning.

Burst Pipe? Do These Things First

Water from a burst spreads fastest before anyone reaches the stop tap, so the first moves in an older Telarah cottage are yours:

  1. 01

Close the stop tap by the meter

Look for it by the front fence on a quiet day, so you are not searching by torchlight.

  2. 02

Open the lowest tap you have

Draining the pipes takes the pressure off the break.

  3. 03

Leave the switchboard alone if it is wet

Only isolate power where you can reach it dry and safe.

  4. 04

    Move what water can ruin

Rugs, boxes, anything stored under the house on the timber floors the older cottages have.

Then ring. The pre-war weatherboard and post-war brick houses here still have galvanised and clay pipework, and old galvanised rusts from the inside until a section splits with no warning.

What Other Calls Can't Wait?

Sewer overflow

Sewage inside the house is a hygiene risk first and a blockage second. The blocked sewer page covers how we clear the line and camera it afterwards, but an overflow happening right now is an emergency call.

No hot water in winter

No one is in danger, but cold, foggy mornings on the flats make a dead cylinder hard to live with. Repairs, replacements and the temporary tank we can fit while a new system is on order are all on the hot water hub.

Gas

Get everyone out, touch no switches, and ring the emergency line the gas network runs. Once the network says the property is safe, we handle the detection and repair, and the gas leaks page walks through that process.

A leak you cannot find

A water bill climbing with no visible cause can wait for the leak detection service, but water actively pouring through a ceiling cannot.

What Shapes an After-Hours Price?

Outside business hours a higher rate applies, and you hear it on the phone. The rest of the price comes from the repair:

  • Reach: crawling under a raised timber floor to a split takes longer than a split behind a laundry tub
  • The pipe itself: galvanised, clay, copper and PVC each take a different fitting and method
  • Parts: what the repair needs versus what a full section replacement needs
  • Time: how long the water has been running, and what it has soaked

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.

Telarah's Floodplain and Its Older Pipes

Low river-flat country

Telarah sits low beside the Hunter River, behind the flood mitigation levees, and a heavy Hunter storm can push the older stormwater lines and yard grates past what they carry. Water pooling against the slab late at night is an emergency, and the lasting repair is on the stormwater drains page.

Moved houses, old pipes

After the 1955 flood, about 220 timber houses were shifted onto new blocks in the area nicknamed Lionsville. The older housing here still runs clay and galvanised pipe, and a joint weakening for years can give out on a cold night.

Old cylinders in cold cottages

Older homes with poor insulation sit through cold winter mornings on the flats, and a storage heater near the end of its life can stop on one of them.

When We're Not the Right Call

Past your boundary the main is Hunter Water's pipe, so a fault out there is theirs to repair, not a bill for you, and we give you their fault number to call. A wet switchboard or a wiring fault needs a licensed electrician, and they come first if water has reached it.

What Happens When You Call

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4915 2998 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    The emergency gets stopped

The water is shut off and isolated, the split is repaired or the line capped, and the house is made safe before anything else happens.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Customers Say

I commend them for their very fast and efficient service when we had a burst pipe.

Questions We Get at 2am

Do you come out to Telarah in the middle of the night?

Yes. Someone answers whatever the hour. Night work has its own rate, and you get that number during the call, so nothing on the bill catches you out.

What should I do about a burst pipe before you arrive?

Close the stop tap beside the water meter, let a low outside tap empty the pipes, and lift anything with a plug off the wet floor. A damp switchboard means hands off, and mention it when you call.

Is a gas smell a plumbing emergency?

Yes, and the order matters. Clear the house, leave switches alone and ring the gas network's emergency number. When they have made it safe, we trace and fix the leak on your side of the meter.

Will an emergency visit cost more than a daytime one?

Yes, the after-hours rate applies after dark, and it is quoted before you agree to anything. The fixed figure is named once the fault has been seen, and the invoice matches it.
