What Does a Hidden Leak Look Like?
A hidden leak can run for months before anything looks wet. Clues to watch for:
- The meter dial still turning when nothing inside or out is running
- One patch of lawn greener or softer than the rest, even in dry weather
- A hissing or trickling sound behind a wall when nothing is running
- The hot water running short earlier than normal, a hint the hot pipe is leaking
- A water bill that jumps while the household uses water the same way
Each of these deserves a proper trace. A leak hiding today is a flooded floor or a rotten stump some other day.
How the Search Runs
Detectors narrow it down first, so digging stays a last resort. A leak search works like this:
- 01
Isolate the supply
With the stop tap closed, the meter is watched; if it still moves, the loss is on your side of it.
- 02
Trace the run
The pipe locator follows the line under the yard or the floor, so we know exactly where the pipe sits before anything gets opened.
- 03
Listen for the escape
Water forced through a crack makes a sound the acoustic detector picks up through soil and timber, which brings the search down to a short length.
- 04
Show you, then quote
The spot gets marked, the way in gets explained, and the price is fixed before a board or paver is lifted.
How Is a Leak Search Priced?
We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead.
The biggest driver is where the leak sits, because a joint weeping in an open laundry is a different job to a run buried under a suspended timber floor. What feeds into the figure:
- Access Since crawling under a low pre-war cottage floor takes longer than working in a high, clear subfloor
- The material in the line Because a corroded galvanised joint, a cracked clay section and a split copper pipe each get a different repair
- Length of pipe to trace As a long run to the back fence takes more time with the detector
- The repair itself Whether the fix is a single joint swap or replacing a whole rusted length
Old Pipe, Moving Ground
The soil here works pipes hard
Separate houses mean long private pipe runs
Galvanised and clay are the older materials
What Customers Say
The team … were fantastic in quickly assessing a massive water leak at my place. They also went above and beyond in fixing it promptly.
When We're Not the Right Call
Some damp and drip jobs belong to other trades or other pages. Here is where each one goes:
Gas, not water
Roof or shower, not pipe
The tank, not the line
Drain trouble too
Before You Ring: Leak Questions
Can you find a leak under a Telarah cottage?
Yes. With the locator marking the pipe and the acoustic detector listening along it, the fault is pinned to a metre or two, working from the subfloor access that is already there. Boards only come up if the repair needs it, and you approve that price first.
Could a creeping meter mean a yard leak here?
It can. Telarah's alluvial and clay ground can absorb a slow weep from an old yard pipe without a puddle ever forming. If the meter dial turns with every tap shut, the line is losing water and needs tracing.
Do you trace leaks in old galvanised pipe?
We do. Galvanised pipe corrodes from within, and the first weep tends to show at a threaded joint or a thinned wall. After the trace, the damaged length is priced as either a repair or a replacement.
Does the repair carry a warranty?
Every repair we carry out comes with our 365-day warranty on all work. It applies to the joint we fixed or the length we replaced, and a problem with that work inside the year brings us back.
